Thanks so much Baby Friendly LA for the fab review of our Children’s DVD Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake! Tutu clad preschoolers everywhere thank you and your super cool web site for inspiring countless more kids to throw on a tutu and get up and dance!

Prima Princessa

"A DVD for budding ballerinas

I think I have a future ballerina on my hands. Even though she's only doing the wobbly, drunk-baby walk right now, her little eyes light up whenever she sees ballet or dancing. We were asked to review the new video, Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake, and it's official: Ava needs a tutu.

Prima Princessa was created by two, ambitious stay-at-home moms who wanted to produce something unique for young girls interested in ballet and the art of dance. Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller had no prior movie making experience. These New Jersey moms were inspired by their daughters' love of dance and lack of ballet videos for their young age group. So with a lot of creativity, a lot of patience and a whole lot of love, Prima Princessa – a colorful, animated fairy ballerina who narrates through classical productions - was born. I'm always so inspired by moms following their dreams. To read Mary Kate and Stephanie's story, click here.

Prima Princessa is a fun way for young girls (and moms too!) to not only experience the beauty and grace of ballet, but to actually learn about the story as well. The Paris Opera Ballet performs the enchanting tale of Swan Lake while our storyteller informs us to what each act is about. I will admit… It's been a very long time since I've seen Swan Lake and I found the narration of this fairy-tale thoroughly engaging. Ava loved watching the twirling and dancing while I was enjoying the complete ensemble.

In between each of the four acts is an intermission. Ava really perked up when the little darlings, girls about 3-4 years of age, came out in their tutus and pranced around a luscious, green yard. I could tell she wanted to join them. Prima Princessa then explained various ballet moves while students from the School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center demonstrated the different dance positions. At one point they were performing jetes – or jumps, and repeatedly said the word "jump" several times. What do I hear from the little voice sitting next to me? That's right... "jump." Ava learned a new word and kept saying it over and over each time they leaped across the screen. Then of course mommy had to make a fool of herself and start jumping in the living room… but enough about that.

Prima Princessa combines the magical storytelling of ballet, the how-to instructions for learning and colorful animation to create an engaging way for budding ballerinas to discover their inner princess. I see this video growing with us as Ava's blossoming interest in all things pink and girly continues to flourish. Look out tutus… here we come!

"Prima Princessa presents Swan Lake"

January 27, 2009 · Jessica

"As a little girl, I can remember prancing around the house like a ballerina or pretending to ice skate on the frozen puddle in front of my house. My best friend and I always wanted to be ballerinas, but never had the discipline. Neither of us ever lost of our love of ballet, so when I was given the opportunity to review the “Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake” DVD, I was thrilled. Once it arrived in the mail, I called up my friend and we curled up on the couch to watch it together and tried out some of the moves for ourselves.

Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake” was produced by two stay-at-home moms, Stephanie Troeller and Mary-Kate Mellow, who were inspired by their children’s love of dance and their desire to see higher quality, culturally enriching programming for young children. And a fine job they did when putting together this fabulous DVD. Prima Princessa, an animated fairy ballerina, transports the group of little ballerinas to see the Paris Opera Ballet perform select segments of Swan Lake. The DVD is split into four acts and between those acts, your princesses are returned home to learn simple ballet steps through a colorful montage of toys, animals, children and young dancers from the School of American Ballet."

"You can’t get your kid out of her tutu, but hey, maybe you’ve got the next prima ballerina on your hands.

Indulge her dance mania with Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake, a sweet and age-appropriate new ballet DVD for ages 3 to 6. The 40-minute DVD features dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet performing select segments of the classic Swan Lake. In between acts, steps like pirouettes are reinforced through fun dance montages of young students from NYC’s School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center, little girls in tutus, and even toys and animals. The entire enchanting experience is hosted by Prima Princessa, an animated fairy ballerina.

Now, back to the barre.

"The Arts: Dance Training at Any Age with Prima Princessa"

"Having fond memories of my own years as a "ballerina," I couldn't wait to get my own little girl in a tutu. Coincidentally, the same week that the Prima Princessa DVD arrived, my daughter received a tutu as a gift from a family member, and so naturally we put both on together to prepare for her first ballet lesson. Created by moms and combining the Paris Opera Ballet and Students from School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center, the Prima Princessa DVD is a must for any ballerina in training. My daughter's favorite part was watching the girls pirouette, and mine was watching her attempt to do the same. She was prepared for her first Mommy & Me dance class, and was the Prima Ballerina after practicing up with Prima Princessa!

Cool Tip: Purchase Prima Princessa at Amazon, the perfect gift for girls who love ballet!"

Review: Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake

"Do you have a little ballerina at your house? Are you looking for the perfect gift for girls or a stocking stuffer for your princess? Look no further! You’ve found it!

Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake is a DVD for young ballerinas! It’s fun, instructional, and entertaining at the same time!

Prima Princessa, an animated fairy ballerina, narrates the DVD, taking the ballerina viewers to a production of Swan Lake, performed beautifully by the Paris Opera Ballet. In between acts, viewers are shown how to do different ballet steps, such as a pirouette, through a montage of young ballerinas, toys, and students from the School of American Ballet.

Created by two stay-at-home moms, who wanted to encourage their children’s love of dance, as well as promote high-quality educational programming for young children.

Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake does exactly that. In fact this DVD has been awarded the Dove “Family-Approved” seal for family-friendly viewing from the Dove Foundation.

The Low-Down on Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake

The Good:

The DVD is fun to watch…even for an adult.

Prima Princessa does a good job of narrating Swan Lake for young viewers, who might have trouble interpreting dance movements.

Dance steps are taught in an entertaining fashion.

The ballet is truly beautiful.

The segments are broken up in such a way that young viewers won’t get bored.

The Bad:

There’s no bad. Really.

My Overall Opinion:

Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake is a great buy for the young ballerina, the perfect gift for girls. Though the 40 minute DVD is geared toward preschool aged girls, I think even young grade school girls would enjoy the beauty of watching the Paris Opera Ballet perform Swan Lake. If my daughter were younger and into ballet, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase this DVD for her. That’s how much I liked it! Unlike so much of the over-commercialized DVDs out there today, this one is high quality, instructional, and still lots of fun! This one gets an A++!

Be sure to visit the Prima Princessa website for more information and Prima Princessa coloring pages!"

"40 minutes of ballerina fairy fun! Prima Princessa presents Swan Lake DVD is a narrated DVD featuring preschool girls in tutus, an animated fairy, students from the School of American Ballet, and the Paris Opera Ballet.

The girls and I were mesmerized by the graceful ballet dancers and loved the narration! Having the story explained as the dance was being performed really kept the girls’ attention.

Learning the ballet terminology was fun- including some fancy words we don’t hear in dance class.

Makes a great stocking stuffer! Order Prima Princessa on Amazon today!

Check out the giveaway on TuTuZone Blog now to win the DVD and a fairy princess dress up set."

Prima Princessa

"Little ballerinas in your house? I have two, and they are loving this video. Prima Princessa tells the story of Swan Lake through actual footage from the Swan Lake production performed by the Paris Opera Ballet. That's right, your child will watch a formal ballet being performed, enjoy it....and ask you to watch it again and again (even my son asks for it).

Prima Princessa keeps the formal ballet exciting by cutting away frequently to girls playing in tutus (practicing moves learned from the video), a display of proper ballet form by young ballerinas at the School of American Ballet here in New York City, and a flying cartoon fairy (that will drive you crazy, but your kids will eat it up). To see a video clip of what to expect, click here.

I am hoping to take my 5 and 6 year-old daughters to a ballet here in NYC within the next year, and thought I should give them a small dosage of what to expect. This has given me a little more reassurance that they would enjoy it.

If your child is interested in, or is currently taking ballet, Prima Princessa will be guaranteed fun and excitement."

"My 3 1/2 year old daughter loves to dance. Tutus, Leotards, Tights, Slippers - she can't get enough. When she was just 2 years old she would see the dancers on reality TV shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" and try to imitate their moves and dance along. I knew at that moment that I needed to get her into dance class - and that I did. All week long she looks forward to going to dance and the minute class ends she can't wait until the next time she goes back. When I was given the opportunity for her to try out this Prima Princessa DVD, I was so excited for her. We waited until her older brother was off at school so she could enjoy it in all of its girly tutu-lovin' splendor. This was one of those moments that I truly LOVE being the mama of a girly girl.

Prima Princessa was developed by Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller - both stay-at-home-moms of dance-loving girls from NJ (like me!). They recognized the need for age appropriate ballet DVDs for children and when they didn't find what they were looking for, they decided to make their own. I love it! They even have a blog called TuTuZone - check it out.

Prima Princessa brings real performances of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet right into your living room and more! I watched with awe as my 3 year old was captivated by the dancers and even followed along with the complicated plot of Swan Lake. Just when I thought she was about to lose her focus and attention the DVD changed to little girls in tutus learning how to do a pirouette. It reminded me a bit of the popular Baby Einstein movies that my kids loved when they were younger, except aimed for the preschool/dancing audience. My tiny ballerina Belle loved watching the other children in tutus on the screen and danced right along with them. Before I knew it she had dressed herself in one of her favorite tutus, leotards, her slippers, a tiara, and fairy wings and it was back to Swan Lake.

Prima Princessa includes 4 short acts from Swan Lake with intermissions. The intermissions are footage of little girls in tutus learning some basic dance steps & having a blast dancing around. I love that she got right up and danced along and didn't just sit there watching. This DVD held my daughter's attention the entire 40 minutes. I don't know what she loves watching more - the other little dancing girls in tutus that are just like her or the fancy Paris Opera Ballet dancers in tutus that she aspires to be- she loves it all. What a perfect gift the Prima Princessa DVD makes for a little girl who loves to dance.

"Win a REALLY cute video for your Special Girl!"

"The moms that were the brains behind "Prima Princessa" have allowed me to view their DVD for children entitled, Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake and now they want one of my lucky readers to have their very own copy! Prima Princessa Presents Swan Lake is a 40-minute DVD for children 3-7, with an animated fairy ballerina who magically transports a group of little girls to see the world famous Paris Opera Ballet perform Swan Lake. The show is cleverly abbreviated for kids and narrated beautifully by an adorable cartoon ballerina. Between acts, the children return home to learn simple ballet steps, which are playfully shown mixed into colorful montages of toys, animals, children and young dancers from the School of American Ballet, the official academy of the New York City Ballet. While I was viewing it I have to say as a teacher, I love the "Sesame Streetish" way that they introduce French words (ballet vocabulary) to children. This video would be great for all the little dancers in your family. If you have a little girl who takes dance or loves fairies and princesses this would be VERY entertaining - and educational! As a teacher I feel it is important to give your children as many experiences as you can. I can tell you that you can really tell a difference in children who have had "life experiences" and those who do not. There vocabulary is so much richer. Life experiences don't have to cost money. You can go to museums for free with a pass (usaually your library has one), cooking with your children is also awesome, as well as just taking a nature walk and talking about it. There are tons of things you can do to give your children experiences. My fist thought about this video as I was watching it was, "How awesome that you are showing your children the REAL live performance of Swan Lake!" But, let's face it... little girls can't quite grasp the plot on their own. I can vouch for this... my second grade class went to a ballet of the Nutcracker and over half of them fell asleep! However, with the way that Prima Princessa narrates the ballet and brings it down to their level, any child can understand and enjoy Swan Lake!"
